Subnautica 2 Root Canyon Biome: Depth, Danger and Resources

Root Canyon's depth range, resources, wrecks and Collector Leviathan danger in Subnautica 2's Karakorum Ruins Region, with the safe passage route.

Root Canyon is a deep canyon biome inside the Karakorum Ruins Region, running from 364 to 750 metres. It is one of the most dangerous stretches of “normal” water in Subnautica 2 — not because it is hard to survive on its own, but because two Collector Leviathans patrol the water above it. Players come here for rare metals and access to the Karakorum Metal Farms cavern, and the entire trip is a lesson in depth discipline over combat.

Why players go to Root Canyon

Root Canyon holds a resource table you cannot get in shallow water: Celestine, Atacamite, Silver, Gold, and Sulfur alongside the more common Titanium, Quartz, Copper, and Salt. It also connects directly to the Karakorum Metal Farms cavern, where players harvest Axum Bacterial Culture — of which there are only five in the entire world, with zero respawns — to build renewable Metal Farms. That crafting chain is covered in full in the Axum Bacterial Culture guide and the Mangalloy Metal Farms guide; this page focuses on the biome itself — its depth, its resident danger, and how to move through it safely.

Two notable wrecks sit inside the canyon: the Therapy Room and Stairway to Heaven, both worth a scan pass if you are already down there for resources.

How to prepare for and traverse Root Canyon

  1. Equip the Depth Module on your Tadpole before you leave base. Root Canyon’s floor sits well past what an unmodified Tadpole can safely reach, and the Karakorum Metal Farms cavern requires the same upgrade.
  2. Bring a Sonic Resonator. With two leviathans patrolling the water column above you, early warning matters more than raw speed.
  3. Descend early and stay low. Do not cross the open approach at mid-depth — that is exactly where the patrol lane sits. Drop toward the floor before you commit to the crossing.
  4. Hold a 400-450 metre band and hug the floor once you are inside canyon territory. Both Collector Leviathans hunt the upper and mid water layer, not the floor, so staying low is what keeps you unseen.
  5. Never ascend toward the ceiling inside the caves. Drifting upward is what pulls you back into the leviathans’ hunting layer — this is the single most common way players get spotted.
  6. Plan one clean descent-harvest-exit loop. Every extra ascent to reposition is another chance to be noticed.

That is the condensed version of the route. For the full breakdown of exactly where each Collector Leviathan patrols and why the depth band works, read the dedicated Collector Leviathan guide — it covers the mechanic in more detail than this page needs to.

The danger: two Collector Leviathans

Root Canyon is patrolled by two separate Collector Leviathans — one on the approach lane above the Karakorum Metal Farms cavern mouth, and one at a shallower depth directly above Root Canyon itself. Both hunt the upper and mid water column rather than the floor, which is the whole reason the 400-450 m hover-and-hug approach works. Treat them as environmental hazards to route around, not enemies to fight.

AtacamiteRoot Canyon-tier rare material
SilverRare metal, crafting
GoldRare metal, crafting

The mix of common and rare materials in one table is what makes the trip worthwhile even before you factor in the Metal Farms cavern beyond it.

Root Canyon vs. the Shallows

Root Canyon is the deep, gear-gated counterpart to Subnautica 2’s starting water. The Shallows biome guide covers the beginner-safe end of that spectrum in detail; here is the short version of the contrast:

If Root Canyon still feels tame by comparison once you have the route memorized, the Void biome guide covers what lies beyond even this depth band. You can also check the interactive map and creature database for the wider Karakorum Ruins layout before committing to a run.

FAQ

How deep is Root Canyon? Root Canyon runs from 364 to 750 metres, inside the Karakorum Ruins Region.

Do I need special gear to reach Root Canyon? Yes. A Depth Module on your Tadpole is required to safely operate at Root Canyon’s depths, and a Sonic Resonator is strongly recommended given the two patrolling Collector Leviathans.

Is Root Canyon worth the risk? For the resource table alone — Celestine, Atacamite, Silver, Gold, and Sulfur — yes, and it is also the only route to the Karakorum Metal Farms cavern. The risk is manageable once you understand the leviathans hunt the upper water column, not the floor.

Will I run into the Collector Leviathan just passing through Root Canyon? Only if you cross at the wrong depth. Staying in the 400-450 m band and hugging the floor keeps you beneath both patrols; ascending toward the ceiling is what triggers detection.
