Subnautica 2 Collector Leviathan: Where It Is & How to Slip Past
The Collector Leviathan guards the Karakorum Metal Farms cavern in Subnautica 2. Here is where both of them patrol and the depth band that lets you pass undetected.
The Collector Leviathan is the gatekeeper of the Karakorum Metal Farms cavern in Subnautica 2, and it is the main reason the trip to harvest Axum Bacterial Culture feels so tense. It is not a boss you fight — it is a patrol you read and route around. Get the depth band right and it never knows you were there.
Not the creature you meant? The Collector Leviathan is a live Early Access threat. If you are looking for the hidden, datamined dragon-like one, that is the Elusive Leviathan — a different creature entirely.
Where the Collector Leviathan patrols
There are two Collector Leviathans in play around the Root Canyon Biome, and they cover different layers of water:
| Leviathan | Where it roams |
|---|---|
| Approach patrol | The open water before the Karakorum Metal Farms cavern and directly overhead the cave mouth |
| Upper patrol | A shallower band above the Root Canyon Biome |
The key insight is that both of them hunt the layer above you. The Collector sweeps the upper and mid water column on the approach lane to the cavern; it does not comb the floor. That gives you a safe corridor if you stay disciplined about depth.
The depth band that keeps you hidden
Approach the Karakorum Metal Farms cavern by hovering at 400 to 450 metres and coming in low — travel along the bottom rather than cutting across open water at the leviathan’s level. Held in that band, the patrolling Collector overhead will not detect you.
Two rules keep the run clean:
- Come in from below, not across. Crossing the open approach at mid-depth puts you straight into the patrol lane. Drop deep early and hug the floor in.
- Do not ascend once you are inside the cavern. Drifting toward the ceiling is what lifts you back into the Collector’s hunting layer. Stay low while you harvest and leave the same way you came.
You will need the Depth Module on your Tadpole to legally sit at 400–450 m in the first place — the same upgrade the Axum harvest requires.
Why you are down here at all
The only reason to brave the Collector’s patrol is the Karakorum Metal Farms cavern itself: the central glowing green pool holds all five of the world’s Axum Bacterial Cultures, and each one feeds a Metal Farm. The leviathan is the price of admission to a renewable metal economy.
Plan the full trip — descent, harvest and exit — in one pass rather than yo-yoing up and down, since every ascent is a fresh chance to be spotted. For the harvesting half of the run (including the floor-clip bug that can delete a culture), read the Axum Bacterial Culture guide, and check the interactive map and biome database for the surrounding Root Canyon layout.
Encounter checklist
- Depth Module equipped — you cannot hold the safe band without it.
- Descend early; approach the cavern hugging the floor at 400–450 m.
- Never rise toward the ceiling inside the cavern.
- Treat both leviathans as upper-layer patrols and stay beneath them.
- One clean descent-harvest-exit loop beats three nervous half-runs.
The Collector Leviathan rewards patience over speed. Read its layer, stay under it, and the scariest creature on the route never becomes a problem.
Early Access note: patrol behaviour is current as of the May 22 Hotfix 2 build. Creature aggression timing and aggro range are named targets for the upcoming Hotfix 3 — see our Patch Notes Hotfix 3 Watch before you rely on these patterns after the next update.
