Subnautica 2 Axum Bacterial Culture: Location & Safe Harvest
Where to find Axum Bacterial Culture in Subnautica 2, how to slip past the Collector Leviathan, and the floor-clip bug that can delete it for good.
Axum Bacterial Culture is one of the most punishing pickups in Subnautica 2 Early Access: there are only five in the entire world, none of them respawn, and the single place they grow is a leviathan-patrolled cave nearly 450 metres down. Worse, the current build has a bug that can drop the culture through the floor and delete it permanently. This guide covers exactly where to go, how to arrive unseen, and how to harvest without losing one.
If you only remember one thing: harvest with the Sonic Resonator, not by hand. The rest is route discipline.
What Axum Bacterial Culture is for
Axum is a gate material. Each Metal Farm you build costs one Axum Bacterial Culture plus one Mangalloy Ingot, and Metal Farms are how you turn a renewable trickle of metal into a self-sustaining base economy. With only five Axum in the world, that means a hard ceiling of five Metal Farms per save — so every culture you lose is a Metal Farm you can never build. For the full crafting chain, see our Mangalloy and Metal Farms guide.
Where to find Axum Bacterial Culture
All five cultures grow in the glowing green industrial runoff pools of the Karakorum Metal Farms, out in the Root Canyon region.
| Waypoint | Detail |
|---|---|
| Area | Karakorum Metal Farms (glowing green runoff pools) |
| Rough position | Out east of your early-game area — community routes put it ~2 km east of the Lifepod, near the Alien Ruins Research Base line |
| Depth | Around 400 metres (reports range ~400–450 m) |
| Hard requirement | Depth Module equipped on the Tadpole |
Exact bearings vary between guides because different writers measure from different landmarks (the Lifepod vs the Alien Ruins Research Base), but they all point at the same glowing-pool cavern roughly 400 m down. You cannot reach the pools without the Depth Module on your Tadpole — they sit below the Tadpole’s stock crush depth, so unlock that upgrade before you make the run. Mark the cavern mouth with a beacon the first time you find it; you will be coming back for repeat harvests, and you do not want to re-navigate the descent under pressure.
For broader resource routing around this area, cross-check our Subnautica 2 resources guide and the interactive map.
Getting past the Collector Leviathan
The Karakorum Metal Farms cavern is guarded. A Collector Leviathan patrols the open water overhead and in the approach lane before you reach the cave, and a second Collector Leviathan roams at shallower depth above the Root Canyon Biome.
The trick is that the Collector hunts the layer above you. Approach the cavern by hovering at 400 to 450 metres and staying low — come in from below, not across, and the patrolling leviathan above will not detect you. Once you are inside the cavern, do not ascend toward the ceiling: drifting up is what puts you back into the Collector’s lane.
We break the encounter down in full, including both patrol patterns and escape routing, in the Collector Leviathan guide.
The floor-clip bug — harvest with the Sonic Resonator
Here is the part that ruins runs. In the current Early Access build, manually harvesting an Axum Bacterial Culture can cause the item to clip through the floor geometry, dropping it under the map where it is permanently unrecoverable. With only five in the world and zero respawns, a single clip is a permanent loss.
The reliable workaround the community has settled on:
- Use the Sonic Resonator to harvest, not a hand pickup. The resonator dislodges the culture cleanly and avoids the rare floor-clip that manual harvesting can trigger.
- Harvest one culture at a time and confirm it is in your inventory before moving to the next node.
- If you are running low on oxygen or the leviathan is close, leave and come back rather than rushing a manual grab — the cultures do not despawn, but a lost one never returns.
This is a live bug tied to the current build, so it may be patched. Check our Patch Notes tracker before each major harvest run to see whether a hotfix has changed Axum harvesting.
Quick checklist before you dive
- Depth Module unlocked and equipped on the Tadpole.
- Sonic Resonator on hand for harvesting.
- Beacon dropped at the cavern mouth.
- Approach plan: descend to 400–450 m and come in low to dodge the Collector Leviathan.
- Mental note: five cultures total, no respawns, one Metal Farm each.
Get the route and the harvesting discipline right and Axum stops being a save-killer. Treat it carelessly and you can quietly lock yourself out of Metal Farms for the rest of the run.
Early Access note: locations, the harvest bug and the Metal Farm recipe are current as of the May 22 Hotfix 2 build. Treat them as confirmed-for-now and re-check our trackers after each patch.
