Subnautica 2 has precursor and alien-tech content spread across three different confidence tiers, and mixing them up is the fastest way to waste a dive. Reachable right now: the Axum Observatory and the Rosetta Stone, both in the Overgrown Ruins biome. Confirmed but locked: the World Tree, a passive Titan-class organism sitting beyond the current world border. Rumored only: an “Alien Crypt” landmark and the Great Trench threshold, both surfaced through community datamines and not yet detailed by Unknown Worlds. This guide sorts all of it so you stop chasing landmarks that aren’t in the build yet.
What’s reachable today
If you want to see alien architecture in the live Early Access build, there is exactly one route: the Overgrown Ruins biome in the Karakorum Ruins Region.
- Head into Overgrown Ruins. It runs 0–600 metres and holds both landmarks below — see the full Overgrown Ruins biome guide for depth prep and fauna awareness before you commit to the deeper sections.
- Visit the Axum Observatory first. It’s the biome’s signature alien structure. Note that it shares a name root with the Axum Bacterial Culture harvested at Karakorum Metal Farms, but the two are unrelated locations — don’t expect a culture harvest here.
- Find the Rosetta Stone. An alien artifact framed as a translation or lore device — a fixed landmark, not a moving encounter, so there’s no timing pressure once you’re in range.
- Check the Biolab if you’re already in the Axum Ruins area. It was added in the EA 1.1 “Adaptive Measures” patch (July 8, 2026) and sits inside the same biome footprint, so it’s a natural extension of the same trip.
- Stay alert for the Bloom Parasite. EA 1.1 balanced it specifically around Coral Gardens and Ruins-type biomes, which includes Overgrown Ruins — it isn’t a patrol-and-evade threat like a leviathan, but it’s not an empty museum either.
That’s the entire “reachable today” list. Everything else below is either locked behind the current world border or still unconfirmed.

Confirmed but locked: the World Tree
The World Tree is a passive, sessile Titan-class organism and one of the largest living things in the Subnautica 2 setting — this much is confirmed. What isn’t available yet is access to it: it sits in Xanadu, past the Great Trench, both of which are beyond the current Early Access world border. Unknown Worlds’ official roadmap states that a future update — described only as “later in the year,” with no firm date — will add a new region along with new creatures and resources. That update is the most likely candidate for eventually opening Xanadu access, though nothing has been confirmed about what specifically unlocks it. Track this on the roadmap tracker.
Rumored only: the Great Trench and “Alien Crypt”
Two pieces of this puzzle currently exist only as community datamine claims, not official reveals:
- Great Trench — described in community sourcing as the threshold zone separating the current playable world from Xanadu. It has not been explored in the live build and is not officially detailed by Unknown Worlds yet.
- “Alien Crypt” — a landmark name that has surfaced in community datamines tied to the Xanadu area beyond the Great Trench. This is the least certain claim on this page: treat it as a rumor until Unknown Worlds says otherwise.
Both belong firmly in the same bucket as the Elusive Leviathan — real enough to be worth knowing about, not real enough to plan a route around.
