Subnautica 2 Soundtrack & OST: Ben Prunty Returns

Ben Prunty (FTL, Below Zero) composes the Subnautica 2 OST. What we know, when the album drops, and where to listen until the official release.

Subnautica 2 Soundtrack & OST: Ben Prunty Returns

The atmosphere of the Subnautica franchise has always been heavily driven by its incredible music, and Subnautica 2 is no exception.

The Composer

The soundtrack for Subnautica 2 is composed by the incredibly talented Ben Prunty.

Ben Prunty is a legend in the indie gaming scene, best known for composing the iconic synth-heavy soundtrack for FTL: Faster Than Light. He also previously worked with Unknown Worlds, composing the soundtrack for Subnautica: Below Zero.

His return guarantees that Subnautica 2 will feature a perfect blend of awe-inspiring ambient tracks for the safe zones, and terrifying, pulse-pounding synth beats for Leviathan encounters.

Official Soundtrack (OST) Availability

As the game enters Early Access on May 14, 2026 (see the release date page), the Official Soundtrack is expected to be released gradually alongside the game updates.

Currently, the main theme featured in the Cinematic Trailer is the only publicly available track.

We will embed the official Spotify and Apple Music playlist here as soon as Ben Prunty releases the album.

Listen to the Trailer Theme

While we wait for the full OST release, you can listen to the atmospheric backing track of the official trailer here — and check out our frame-by-frame trailer analysis for the visual context.

What to Expect from Ben Prunty’s Subnautica 2 Score

Based on his work on FTL, Subnautica: Below Zero, and Cosmoteer, we can predict the Subnautica 2 OST will lean into:

  • Synth-driven ambient pads for shallow biomes — long sustained chords with subtle modulation, designed to fade into the background while you scan and gather.
  • Percussion-led tension cues for predator encounters — sharp staccato hits layered over a low rumble. Listen carefully to the trailer’s worm Leviathan reveal sequence for an early sample.
  • Melodic motifs tied to story beats — Ben Prunty consistently uses recurring themes for major characters and locations. Expect to hear the same musical phrase reappear when you uncover key narrative moments.
  • Diegetic environmental sound design woven into the score — the line between music and ocean ambience will blur intentionally.

Ben Prunty’s Subnautica Track Record

The composer’s history with the franchise is exactly why fans are excited:

  • Subnautica: Below Zero (2021) — full OST, widely praised for emotional range
  • Several individual tracks for the original Subnautica’s update DLC
  • Collaboration with Unknown Worlds on Natural Selection 2 sound design

Below Zero’s OST is available on Ben Prunty’s Bandcamp — a good preview of what Subnautica 2 will sound like.

Where the OST Will Be Available

Based on the precedent set by Below Zero:

  • Bandcamp — usually drops first, supports the composer most directly
  • Spotify — typically within a week of Bandcamp release
  • Apple Music — same window as Spotify
  • YouTube Music — official Unknown Worlds channel uploads
  • iTunes Store — for purchase, parallel to streaming

We will embed the official streaming widget on this page within 24 hours of any of these going live.

OST FAQ

When will the Subnautica 2 OST be released? Likely gradually — partial drops as Early Access milestones hit, with a full album release closer to the 1.0 full launch.

Will the soundtrack be sold separately? Yes — Below Zero’s OST was sold as a standalone Bandcamp release for $10. Expect similar pricing for Subnautica 2.

Is the music dynamic / adaptive in-game? Subnautica 1 used adaptive layering (different stems play based on biome, depth, and threat level). Subnautica 2 is expected to expand this approach significantly with UE5’s audio middleware.

Can I listen to the trailer theme on its own? Currently it is only available embedded in the cinematic trailer above. A standalone release of the trailer theme is rumored for early May.
