For the first time in the franchise’s history, Subnautica 2 features official multiplayer support. You no longer have to face the terrifying depths alone. Here is everything you need to know about playing with friends.

How Multiplayer Works

  • Up to 4 Players: You can form a team of up to four ‘Pioneers’.
  • Drop-in / Drop-out: You don’t need to commit to a multiplayer-only save. You can convert your single-player world into a co-op session at any time.
  • Cross-Platform Play: PC players (Steam / Epic) and Xbox Series X|S players can seamlessly play together.
  • Optional: The game is still built from the ground up as a premier single-player experience. Playing co-op is entirely optional, and no story or content is locked behind multiplayer.

4-Player Co-op Roles & Tips

To maximize efficiency (and survival chances), consider dividing tasks among your team:

1. The Quartermaster (Base Builder)

  • Role: Stays near the drop pod or primary base.
  • Tasks: Focuses on managing the Haul Chassis, refining raw materials, building base modules, and monitoring power / oxygen systems.

2. The Gatherer (Miner)

  • Role: Explores the Safe Shallows and immediate surroundings.
  • Tasks: Uses the new Pickaxe Tool and Sonic Blaster to mine Titanium, Copper, and Quartz to keep the Quartermaster supplied.

3. The Scout (Navigator)

  • Role: Pilots the Tadpole vehicle into deeper, unknown biomes.
  • Tasks: Drops beacons, scans new fragments, and locates advanced resources. This player should be comfortable avoiding Leviathans.

4. The Biologist (Food & Upgrades)

  • Role: Manages sustenance and player upgrades.
  • Tasks: Catches fish, manages water filtration, and researches the new DNA Modification mechanics to give the team vital genetic upgrades.

Communication is Key

Since the game features new terrors — like the burrowing worm Leviathan seen in the trailer — communication is essential. If one player is ambushed, the others need to be ready to mount a rescue.

For your first run together, follow the first 24 hours guide and split the four roles above before you load in.

Setting Up Your First Co-op Session

The setup flow is intentionally light — no separate multiplayer save slot, no lobby system, no ranked matchmaking. Here is what to expect:

  1. Host opens their save as normal in single-player mode.
  2. From the pause menu, they select Invite Friends and share an invite via Steam, Epic, or Xbox party.
  3. Friends join directly — no separate download, no migration step. Your existing world becomes a co-op session live.
  4. If the host leaves, the session ends. There is no host migration in the Early Access build (this may change at 1.0).

Pioneers joining late inherit the host’s tech tree and discovered POIs, but their personal inventory and DNA modifications are independent. Plan accordingly when you split resource-gathering duties.

Cross-Play Caveats

Cross-play between PC (Steam, Epic) and Xbox Series X|S works at launch — but a few rough edges to know:

  • Voice chat routes through your platform’s native party system, not in-game. Set up a Discord call or Xbox party before you load in.
  • Text chat is in-game and works cross-platform.
  • Latency is generally fine for co-op survival, but precise predator dodges feel slightly worse than solo. Bring a Repair Tool — your Tadpole will take a few extra hits.
  • Save sharing: Only the host’s save persists. Joiners do not get a copy of the world after they leave.

A four-player team can compress a normally 8-hour solo first day into about 2 hours if they parallelize correctly. Suggested unlock priority for the team as a whole:

  1. Scanner + Survival Knife (every player) — cannot share blueprints scanned by others, so each player needs their own Scanner.
  2. Standard O2 Tank (the Gatherer first) — extends mining range immediately.
  3. Repair Tool (the Quartermaster) — needed for the drop pod radio and base modules.
  4. Habitat Builder + first Multipurpose Room (Quartermaster) — gives the team a fast-travel anchor point.
  5. Tadpole fragments (Scout’s job to find) — the modular transport vehicle is the team’s biggest force-multiplier.

A common mistake: all four players try to gather Titanium in the first 30 minutes. You only need ~6 Titanium for the first base module — diversify earlier.

Multiplayer-Specific Hazards

Some threats hit harder in co-op than in solo because the Pioneers are louder and more visible together:

  • Crashfish are drawn to clustered movement. Spread out by ~20m when in shallow caves.
  • Stalkers in the Kelp Forest will steal tools from any player, not just the closest. Drop a metal salvage decoy.
  • The Bobbit Worm Leviathan in the Sparse Plains targets the player making the most noise. Quartermasters using the Pickaxe Tool draw aggro the most.

Multiplayer FAQ

Is Subnautica 2 multiplayer free? Yes — once anyone owns a copy of Subnautica 2 (or has Game Pass), all four players in their session can join. No separate multiplayer subscription. Joiners do not need to own the game personally.

Is there PvP? No. The 4-player co-op is purely cooperative. There is no friendly-fire damage, no PvP arenas, and no plans announced for PvP modes.

Can I play with my friends if I’m on PS5? Not at Early Access launch — only PC and Xbox Series X|S support multiplayer right now. See the platform availability page for the current status.

Does the difficulty scale with player count? Slightly. Larger Leviathans gain a small HP buff with more players, and resource respawn rates increase modestly. The game is still tuned for solo as the primary experience.
